Ferdinand I and V was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, and the ruler of the other states of the Habsburg monarchy from March 1835 until his abdication in December 1848. From 2 March 1835 to 12 July 1848, he was also president of the German Confederation. Due to his passive but well-intentioned character, he gained the sobriquet The Benign or The Benevolent.
