Traditional Chinese chronology places Confucius's birth on this date in the state of Lu during the tumultuous Spring and Autumn period. His teachings on virtue, social harmony, and proper governance, compiled by disciples after his death, became the philosophical backbone of Chinese bureaucracy, family structure, and education for more than two thousand years, and his birthday is still observed as Teachers' Day in Taiwan.
Confucius was born into a minor aristocratic family that had fallen into poverty, and he spent much of his career as a low-ranking official and itinerant teacher rather than the celebrated sage later generations imagined. He lived through a period of constant warfare between rival Chinese states, and his central preoccupation was restoring social order through moral cultivation rather than force - a message that found little traction with the warlords of his own lifetime.
It was only after his death that his students compiled his sayings into the Analects, and it took centuries more before Han dynasty emperors adopted Confucian philosophy as state orthodoxy. His ideas about filial piety, the rectification of names, and the responsibilities of rulers toward the ruled became so deeply embedded in East Asian civilization that Confucianism shaped civil service exams in China for nearly 1,300 years, right up until 1905.
