By the time of his death, Genghis Khan had unified the Mongol tribes and conquered vast stretches of Asia, from northern China to the Caspian Sea, through a combination of ruthless warfare, meritocratic administration, and mounted-archer tactics that outmaneuvered every army he faced. His exact cause of death and burial site remain unknown, deliberately hidden per Mongol custom, and his empire was divided among his sons and grandsons, who expanded it further into the largest empire the world had known.
Genghis Khan, born Temüjin around 1162, rose from a fractured, impoverished childhood on the Mongolian steppe to unite the warring Mongol and Turkic tribes under a single banner by 1206. What followed was one of history's most explosive military expansions: campaigns against the Western Xia, the Jin dynasty, the Khwarazmian Empire in Central Asia, and beyond, using mobility, discipline, and psychological terror to conquer cities and empires many times the size of his home territory.
He died while leading yet another campaign against the Western Xia in 1227, in what is now Ningxia or Gansu province in China. Mongol chroniclers gave conflicting accounts of his death — a fall from a horse, an illness, an arrow wound — and his followers deliberately concealed his burial site, reportedly diverting a river over the grave and killing anyone who witnessed the burial procession, to prevent looting or desecration. It has never been found.
At his death, the Mongol Empire already stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Pacific. His sons and grandsons, especially Kublai Khan, would extend it further, creating a realm that facilitated unprecedented exchange of trade, ideas, and technology across Eurasia via the Silk Road — even as it left a trail of devastated cities and, by some estimates, tens of millions dead.
