Tydings-McDuffie Act Signed

The Tydings-McDuffie Act established the Commonwealth of the Philippines and set a firm ten-year timetable for full independence, ending decades of ambiguous American colonial rule following the Spanish-American War. It also imposed strict immigration quotas on Filipinos entering the United States, reflecting the racial anxieties that shaped the law's passage alongside genuine anti-colonial sentiment in Congress.

Exxon Valdez Runs Aground

Steered off course to avoid ice, the tanker Exxon Valdez tore open on Bligh Reef just after midnight, releasing roughly 11 million gallons of North Slope crude. The spill fouled 1,300 miles of Alaskan coastline, killed hundreds of thousands of seabirds, otters, and seals, and became the defining environmental disaster of its era until the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill surpassed it.
